solutions for Child Presence Detection (CPD)
At 4activeSystems, we are committed to advancing child safety in vehicles through close collaboration with Euro NCAP and the global sensor industry. Our unique solution supports the development and evaluation of in-cabin detection sensor technologies. A key focus of the CPD project was the research and development of highly realistic, skin-like materials optimized for precise radar feedback. These materials ensure reliable test results and compliance with evolving safety standards. Electromagnetic radar waves exhibit human-like reflection and absorption properties, penetrating the skin-like material only a few millimeters depending on frequency – just like real human tissue. The underlying mechatronic actuators remain invisible to all sensors.
We are part of the large Child Presence Detection (CPD) Consortium Project, which includes more than 34 high-tech companies specializing in in-cabin sensing technology.
Our new and advanced in-cabin dummy, the 4activeOD-3YO, is designed to replicate the natural behaviors and movements of a three-year-old child. Based on scientific studies, it features realistic head, arm and leg movements, simulated breathing, and even the ability to perform simple speech sequences. With 17 degrees of freedom to simulate natural motion, this dummy presents a significant challenge for in-cabin safety systems, which must accurately detect, monitor and respond to a child’s presence and activity to prevent injuries or life-threatening situations.
The 4activeOD-3YO reflects movement patterns typical of toddlers – less complex than older children but spontaneous and unpredictable, creating unique challenges for sensor systems. Its ability to perform both automated and manually triggered movement sequences makes it an indispensable tool for developing next-generation in-cabin safety technologies. By enabling more accurate and comprehensive testing, this dummy plays a crucial role in improving vehicle safety and protecting young passengers from potential harm.
